The art of portraiture developed in the Netherlands in the 17th century and never before in old Europe had the art of representation spread to such an extent in all social classes, the portrait taking its place halfway between the private and public spheres. It is used as much to commemorate a life event, as to represent an exaggerated facial expression, or to testify to the social success of the persons represented.<\/p>\n
An interesting and decorative pair of portraits on panels representing a couple in prayer each in front of an open book, on the edge of the man's book a signature unfortunately not legible and a date 1670.<\/p>\n
