A very fine mid-19th-century oil on canvas by the excellent painter Ponthus-Cinier. Signed lower left, it is beautifully framed in carved wood and gilded stucco.<\/p>\n

French landscape painter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n He studied at the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Paul Delaroche.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n He spent two years in Italy, Florence, Rome and Naples.<\/p>\n In 1841, he won the second Grand Prix de Rome.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On his return to France, he embarked on a long tour of the Dauphin\u00e9, the Dombes, Provence, the Alps, Savoy and the Pyrenees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n His art evolved towards a rigorous, scholarly, Italian-style conception of landscape, with an emphasis on decorative effect and picturesque arrangement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n He exhibited at the Lyon Salon between 1837 and 1885, and became very well known in the capital of Gaul, where he received numerous commissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1841.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Works by Claude Antoine Ponthus-Cinier are held in numerous museums in Lyon, Chantilly, Chalon-sur-Sa\u00f4ne, Besan\u00e7on, Brou, Chamb\u00e9ry...
